Mac? Aplikasinya apa aja sih??

Pertama kali punya Mac?

Saya doakan agar pikiran Anda berubah… hahahahahahaha :P

Anyway, cukup basa-basinya, langsung to the point aja :)

1. Microsoft Office for Mac 2011

Apa? Microsoft?

Jawabannya simpel: DOCX, PPTX, XLSX

Microsoft Word for Mac 2011

Template Chooser (Gallery) Microsoft Word

Microsoft PowerPoint for Mac 2011

Microsoft Excel for Mac 2011

Namun bukan Mac namanya kalau hanya santai membiarkan Microsoft merambah “wilayah kekuasannya” :D

Maka muncullah pesaingnya yaitu Office Suite buatan Mac sendiri bernama iWork.

2. iWork ’09

Pages '09

Template Chooser (Gallery) Pages '09

Numbers ’09

Sehingga sejak saya memakai Keynote udah gak pernah lagi makai PowerPoint buat bikin presentasi, hehehe ;)

Hanya satu kekurangan iWork, yakni kompatibilitas.

How to change the interface language of your Macintosh?

I’ve been asked so many many times when I open my Mac and suddenly someone else is looking at its screen:

“Wow, what language is that? Cool! How did you do it?”

It’s understandable since most people are using Windows and unfortunately language add-ons are only offered in Windows Ultimate; even worse you have to download it first (sorry Windows users!) ;)

Mac offers a bunch of language interface straight from the box and all you have to do is just configure them, which is a piece of cake. This can be great for new foreign language learners since immersing yourselves to the language you’re learning is often the best way to get the most of it.

Anyway, let’s see how it works!

The first task to do is to open your System Preferences and go straight into “International”

(this may look a bit different on newer Macs; I’m still using Leopard)

Select your desired language from the list, then drag and drop it to the top of the list.

In this case, I select German (Deutsch).

Log out and log in again…,

Voilà!

Your Mac now speaks different language and you can impress your friends, for sure! :D

Here is how it looks:

And this is the System Preferences pane in comparison with the before state.

(now becomes Systemeinstellungen)

But the best thing with this so-called “Mac-Language-Integration” is that applications which support multi-language localizations will work that way too; in this case Apple Pages & Keynote ’09, and interestingly, the pre-installed templates now also speak differently too!

Apple Pages ’09 (equivalent to Microsoft Word)

Note that the title of the newsletters now changes to German

Apple Keynote ’09 (equivalent to Microsoft PowerPoint)

The template changes its language too!

That’s my How-To and FYI it’s my first writing of its kind!

I hope you enjoy it :)

LETIH

Letih.

“Eh, bikin kaget aja! Ha? Pacar? Pacar darimana, orang punya aja enggak. Eh, Hendi mana?” tanya Andi. “Gak tahu tuh masih tidur kali. Biarin aja, kayaknya dia capek banget. Paling entar juga bangun sendiri. Eh pulang bareng-bareng yuk!” ajak Anita. “Kamu duluan aja deh, aku belakangan aja, mau lihat-lihat taman bunga sekolah dulu.” tolak Andi. “Ngapain lihat-lihat taman bunga? Oooh, mau cari inspirasi buat kalo entar kamu mau kasih bunga ke pacarmu yaaa?? Hayoo!!! Ho, yaudah, aku duluan ya. Dadah!”

Ia melewati kelas demi kelas dari 9-A sampai 9-J.

Ia berjalan cepat menuju pintu gerbang sekolah.

Tiba-tiba…

“ANDI…, ANDI…!!!” “Hey, sudah jam berapa sekarang…???” “Kamu apa tidak sekolah? Mau jadi apa nanti?” teriak ibunya.

“Haah??”, gumam Andi seraya membuka matanya yang masih berat. Ternyata hanya mimpi!

“Siaal… ini semua gara-gara nonton film horor sampai tengah malam…. mana kesiangan lagi… sial!!!”

THE IMPACT OF INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION TO THE WHOLE WORLD

Nowadays, there is virtually none of our time that is not related to some sort of technological advancements that are not even thought about four centuries ago. Just take a look for example, who is not using a mobile phone now? Of course almost all city residents do, even village residents have that too. How about those who do not have a mobile phone? The answer is still yes, obviously. Just take a look to their clothing. Even the simplest one of the clothing now can be traced back in the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, in terms of the way in making it. Before 1760’s, people used to make yarn from cotton by using lengthy traditional processes. But soon after James Hargreaves, an Englishman, invented a multi-spool spinning frame machine that was famously referred as “Spinning Jenny”, the world of yarn making changed rapidly as never imagined before. Not long after that, another Englishman named Samuel Crompton invented an improved version of the machine, called “Spinning Mule”, which makes the process much faster and easier, thus creating high-quality yarns in no time. Soon the demand for cotton increased swiftly and hundreds of new cotton mills were erected afterwards. Such invention of machines happened not only on the textile industry, but also nearly all industries that make use of those advantages, for example the process of smelting pig iron with coke. Moreover, the invention of steam engine in late 1700’s by James Watt had expanded further a completely new possibility on machines, creating a much larger scale industries throughout the United Kingdom, later in Western Europe and United States of America. This kind of invention really has an exponential impact since newly created machines enable people to do much more work effortlessly, thus creating a whole new range of industries, from electronics, households, automotives, aircrafts, etc. In addition, the growing sense of imperialism at that time which also drove globalisation had expanded these advantages, which were caused by Industrial Revolution to the rest of the world. Therefore, it is no wonder that Industrial Revolution has an enormous impact to the whole world because of its significances that surely make the world altered forever, where it had affected many fields from science and technology, economic, lifestyle and history.

Science and technological impacts are indeed the area that has been affected the most by the Industrial Revolution. Hundreds of years ago before Industrial Revolution took place, many technologies used by humans, if not, all of them, were primarily driven manually by traditional processes, by hands or animal-assisted. For example, the mill process, which produced the most important source of food, that is grains, was mostly driven by animals that usually revolve the lever that would grind the grains. Otherwise, it was usually driven by winds, which was common in Western Europe, especially the Netherlands where windmills were ubiquitous, or simply by people themselves, although the latter was relatively uncommon since it would be too strenuous to do that. Other technologies included transportation, where people mostly went somewhere by using transportation modes that used animals, because something like machines were virtually unheard or even to be thought of. That seemed to be changed forever where steam engines were invented in the late 1700’s and fully refined in mid-1800. Soon they discovered that using those steam engines, grains can be made more quickly and of course, a lot more grains can be produced. Another breakthrough also happened in the locomotive world when Richard Trevithick, an Englishman, made the first full scale working railway locomotive using the newly invented steam engine mechanism. These inventions thus demonstrated the full capabilities and possibilities that could be generated by using steam engines. Many improvements and researches made in the following years aided by steam machines led to a newer technology called internal-combustion engine, which consists of petrol and diesel engines, developed by Nikolaus Otto and Rudolf Diesel, respectively. Soon these brand-new inventions gave an absolute boost to the technology with an ever increasing countless new inventions such as light bulbs, cars, more efficient industrial machines, aircrafts, etc. The world of technology is now shaped like never before, thus making better life for everyone.

The advancements of knowledge are actually linked closely to the advancements of science, since technology is the application of science theorems. As said before that technology serves as an aid for everyone, researching for science had been much easier then. It was because of machines that help indirectly to the development of science, like transportation modes, for example. It was much efficient at that time for people doing researches from a place to another place since people could move at a faster rate; making science advancements took place like lightning. Calculus, thermodynamics and quantum physics are few of the science advancements that are connected with the Industrial Revolution.

Shortly after technologies were much improved, the next area that is impacted largely is the economic area. Earlier, people used to work as farmers or herders on farmlands throughout the country, since there were not so much working fields available at that time, unlike now. Nevertheless, when many useful machines had been invented, completely new working fields were established, thus creating more jobs for people. They ranged from machine operators, industrial supervisors, engineers, or even entrepreneurs. This really attracted many people, especially from villages, flocking to the cities to seek for completely new opportunities, which can be described as a large-scale urbanisation. Hundreds of new cities were founded just in Great Britain alone and the existing cities, such as London, experienced rapid growth of population. In 1750, the population of London was just about 700,000 but a century later, in 1850, the population had increased threefold to about 2,363,000. How could this happen? It was because Industrial Revolution had created a new economic niche by setting up a number of new working fields. Statistically speaking, the regional Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita in the Western Europe was just below USD 1,250 from year 1500 to 1800, almost no significant change happened. The advantages caused by Industrial Revolution gave rise to economic growth on GDP to about USD 3,750 in the beginning of year 1900 and to a striking USD 20,000 by year 2000. New working fields mean new opportunities, so these facts are actually no wonder.

Another important contributions made by Industrial Revolution are sudden changes on lifestyle. Formerly, most people were just ordinary peasants or animal herders. Their daily routines were just rather monotonous, getting up in the morning, smearing seeds, managing farms, harvesting them after several months, and so on. When Industrial Revolution began to happen on cities, they flocked there to seek another challenges; then their lifestyles changed entirely. Instead of just doing those farming routines that seemed not changing forever, they faced many new challenges every day. For example, figuring out how machines work and improving it to get the best out of it was no simple task. They had to think more thoroughly so the problem could be solved; unlike before that they just did their activities routinely in almost same manners, nothing really special. Moreover, for those who engaged on businesses faced another challenges too. They had to meet new people to set up many agreements, thus more strategies on behaving are absolutely essential. They now had to travel a lot to many places, even abroad, something that is uncommon previously, again thanks to ever-advancing transportation modes, which made travelling far away feels like a blink of eye. These changes on lifestyle also affected their daily routines greatly. Earlier, people used to sleep for more than 10 hours every day because there was nothing much to do and nights were so dark, after all. During the Industrial Revolution, time was so much important and that made even 24 hours a day not enough to do all the works. Therefore, people rarely slept more than 8 hours then and since the invention of light bulbs, that time were decreased further to 6-7 hours per day, owing to bright nights and many businesses.

Histories also would have been much different if there were no Industrial Revolution. Major advancements on technologies led to growing sense of colonialism and imperialism. Previously, people were rather unenthusiastic to travel to other continents, given the time in doing time could exceed many months. Due to advancements on transportation modes, people went exploring all parts of the world.  Soon the formerly blank and incomplete world map was filled enough with previously unknown places, island, and continents, making people more curious about the world. However, it was another thing that really made colonialism took place, and that was industries. Growing number of industries throughout Europe, especially Great Britain, had made shortages on raw materials, for example cotton, grains, spices, metals, etc. This made them to explore other continents in searching for useful materials to enhance further the industries back in their country. Driven by greediness, instead of trading peacefully with natives on foreign continents, such as Central America, Asia and Africa, they colonise it and enslave many people there. Furthermore, growing powers in Europe such as Great Britain, German Empire, Austro-Hungarian Empire, French Empire and Ottoman Empire had led to a fierce competition among them to become the superpower of the world. This condition led to the First World War that began in the summer of 1914. Even worse, given the advancements occurred on military technologies caused by the Industrial Revolution, the First World War seemed to serve as an exhibition of these new high-tech war tools. Countless of colonisation on third-world areas and ferocious war among the world superpowers in Europe gave rise to another neglected power, Asia. Led by Japan that had improved much of its infrastructures and technologies in the early 1900’s on the Meiji era, Japan showed that Asia is not second class compared to Western World. This subsequently created the Second World War that began when Japan attacked Pearl Harbour in 1941 and reached the climax when USA dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Yet these conflicts did not end after that, because there were only two superpowers left, USA and the Soviet Union. Soon the notorious Cold War emerged, and the two superpowers began to show off their full capabilities on many technologies, especially military technology. These had made the 20th century as the most important century in the human history ever and that could not happen without Industrial Revolution as a trigger.

Nonetheless, of all advantages of the Industrial Revolution there are also some downsides, especially regarding to the fierce history of World Wars. If there were no Industrial Revolution, there would be no World Wars. This fact is not true, though, since wars had already happened long before the Industrial Revolution even took place, for example the Crusade War in medieval ages. Another war would actually take place if there were no Industrial Revolution; it was just that the Industrial Revolution created a war that we identify now as the World War that caused by massive superpowers aided by high-tech technology. Furthermore, people now are really concerned about future conditions that may lead to another war, so they now do anything possible to prevent that from happening by learning from past experiences in World Wars; that would be no problem if we worked together to build up peace. Another argument concerns of lifestyle change, which is not that useful. It is said that lifestyle changes create many complications including tiredness, sickness, and so on. This fact is partially true, since many people now work much harder and barely get enough time to have a rest. However, Industrial Revolution has advantages that can counter these problems, and they are new medicines and tools. Since the discovery of antibiotics and vitamin tablets, people can now work more efficiently during long hours, where medicines and vitamins keep them getting rid of any incoming problems, thus preventing any further complications. Moreover, new technologies also mean new way of solving difficult and tiring problems. Since the invention of mass production method and computers, working has now been much effortless and laid-back. Therefore, Industrial Revolution surely has its own problems, as advantage of something has its disadvantages, but since the disadvantages are not really significant compared to the advantages, the downsides are not that prominent, so now we can thank to the Industrial Revolution for creating a modern and liveable world.

The impacts of Industrial Revolution are without doubt so immense since no part of our lives that is not connected whatsoever with the Industrial Revolution. Therefore, it is truly the fact that happened in history and we must accept that regardless of its downsides, since it is already happened and cannot be rolled back. The important things that we must consider are to understand why it happened and how we should react to that and make the best of it. By knowing some of the facts of the Industrial Revolution we can inarguably living the best of our life and be encouraged to do such revolution in the future by continuing to study hard, research, and work hard, in order to make our lives better than before and to enhance lives of people that are still poor and impoverished. Thus, this earth can be suitable for everyone with no exceptions. Another important thing is that further revolution can surely have its disadvantages, so it is our duty to minimise, if not, get rid of them completely, by learning histories that are caused by the Industrial Revolution, so further revolution will have only its benefits, thus preventing any possible bad side effects that can alter our history again forwards.

GMail’s new look short review

This day when I opened my GMail suddenly I stumbled across this notification:

GMail new look notification (German)

That surely excited me since I fancy things that are new and shiny. But is it?

So let’s give it a look and let’s press the “wechseln” (switch) button.

TADA!!!

GMail New Look!!!

Honestly, it ain’t a big change, but surely it makes my screen looked nicer and simplified with less clutters. Google has make GMail easier to look at, navigate (although this one is where I’m not really sure about, since it’s replaced by some new icons, which need to be learned, albeit can be done quickly), and this is truly a step forward, although not a breakthrough.

Still, GMail has convinced me once again to leave my other mails on other providers :)

So, I’ll use it for several more days to conclude the usability, pros and cons.

Review Singkat MATLAB

Logo MATLAB

A short introduction of me and Bandung

Hello everyone!

In my freshly made blog I’d like to introduce myself a little bit :)

My name is Mohamad Farouq Arifin and I’m usually called Farouq or just “Rouq”, but sometimes Mr. Arifin in some formal situations :D

Currently I study Chemical Engineering in one of the most renowned public universities in Indonesia, Institut Teknologi Bandung (Bandung Institute of Technology), or just ITB for short. ITB traces its history on its predecessor, Technische Hoogeschool te Bandoeng, which was founded in 1920 by the Dutch East Indies government.

Logo ITB 1920

Official logo of Institut Teknologi Bandung

ITB is located in a big city called Bandung, which lies on a 750 metre-high Bandung Plateau. Therefore the climate is much more pleasant than other cities in Indonesia and no wonder it was a favourite place for Dutch people to reside. Many fine Dutch architectures can be found here, such as the ITB itself, Gedung Sate, Savoy Homann hotel, and many more! But if you’re already bored with city life, Bandung still offers a lot more sights! The legendary and famous Tangkuban Parahu volcanic crater is just nearby, surrounded by endless tea and strawberry plantations. Or for a more virgin crater, you can visit Kawah Putih, which is just south of Bandung.

Gedung Sate

So, when you have spare time, just visit Bandung! :D
